Calendar Paper Sizes: A4 vs Letter (and Portrait vs Landscape)

The two paper sizes almost every printable calendar uses are A4 (210 × 297 mm) and US Letter (8.5 × 11 in). A4 is the international standard used almost everywhere outside North America; Letter is standard in the United States and Canada. A4 is a little narrower and noticeably taller than Letter, so the simplest rule is to pick the size your printer already has loaded.

A4 vs Letter: the exact dimensions

Here are the common printable-calendar sizes in both millimetres and inches, from pocket planner up to large wall calendar.

What is actually different about A4 and Letter?

The two sizes are close but not interchangeable. Compared with Letter, A4 is roughly 6 mm (0.24 in) narrower and 18 mm (0.7 in) taller. That comes from how each standard is built. A4 belongs to the ISO 216 A-series, where every size keeps the same 1 : 1.414 proportion and each size is exactly half the one before it, fold an A3 in half and you get two A4 sheets. US Letter (also called ANSI A) uses a squarer 1 : 1.294 proportion and is defined in whole inches.

In practice the mismatch shows up at the edges. Print an A4 design on Letter paper without scaling and the bottom can get clipped; print Letter artwork on A4 and you get an extra strip of white at the foot of the page. This is exactly why choosing the right size before you print saves a wasted sheet.

Portrait or landscape for a calendar?

Orientation matters as much as size, and it depends on the layout:

• Monthly calendars usually look best in landscape, a 7-column week grid has room to breathe, so each day cell is large enough to write in.
• Full-year-on-one-page calendars work in either orientation; portrait suits a tall wall space, landscape suits a desk or noticeboard.
• Weekly planners and to-do layouts are typically portrait, matching the shape of a notebook page.

Printing tips: scaling, margins, and borderless

A few settings make the difference between a clean print and a reprint:

• Scaling. To keep exact sizes, print at 100%. To move a design between A4 and Letter, use “Fit to page”, going A4 to Letter scales to about 94%, and Letter to A4 scales up slightly.
• Margins. Home inkjet and laser printers keep an unprintable margin of a few millimetres. A well-made calendar leaves room for it; ours does by default.
• Borderless. True edge-to-edge printing needs a printer that supports it and a matching setting. If yours does not, expect a thin white frame, that is normal.
• Paper weight. Standard 80 gsm (20 lb) paper is fine for reference calendars; 120 gsm or heavier feels sturdier for a wall calendar.
