About Labor Day (USA)

Labor Day is a federal holiday in the United States observed on the first Monday of September. It honours the American labour movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of the country. For most Americans, it also marks the unofficial end of summer and the beginning of the new school year.

Unlike the May 1 International Workers' Day observed in most other countries, the US Labor Day was deliberately placed in September to distance it from the more radical socialist associations of the May date. Canada also celebrates Labour Day on the first Monday of September.

Labor Day weekend is one of the most popular travel weekends in the United States, with millions of Americans enjoying one last summer getaway. It is also a significant retail event, with Labor Day sales rivalling those of other major shopping holidays.

History & Origins

The origins of Labor Day are rooted in the labour struggles of the late 19th century, when American workers endured 12-hour days, seven-day workweeks, and dangerous conditions. The first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5, 1882, when the Central Labor Union organised a parade and picnic in New York City, with an estimated 10,000 workers marching from City Hall to Union Square.

The holiday gained momentum after the Pullman Strike of 1894, a nationwide railroad strike that was violently suppressed by federal troops, resulting in the deaths of several workers. Seeking to repair relations with the labour movement, President Grover Cleveland signed legislation making Labor Day a federal holiday just six days after the strike ended. By that time, 23 states had already adopted it as a holiday. The choice of September rather than May 1 was a deliberate move by moderate labour leaders and politicians to avoid association with the Haymarket affair and international socialism.

How It's Celebrated

  • Parades — Labor Day parades are held in cities across the country, organised by trade unions and community groups to celebrate workers' achievements and advocate for labour rights.
  • Barbecues & picnics — Outdoor cookouts with family and friends are the quintessential Labor Day activity, taking advantage of the last warm days of summer.
  • End-of-summer travel — The three-day weekend is one of the busiest travel periods in the US, with beach trips, lake visits, and camping excursions especially popular.
  • Back to school — For many families, Labor Day marks the transition from summer vacation to the new school year, with some school districts starting classes the day after the holiday.
  • Sales & shopping — Major retailers offer Labor Day sales on furniture, appliances, clothing, and electronics, making it one of the top shopping weekends of the year.
  • Fashion tradition — The old adage "no white after Labor Day" reflects the holiday's role as a seasonal dividing line in American culture, though this fashion rule has largely fallen out of strict observance.
