Labour Day, also known as International Workers' Day or May Day, is observed on May 1 in most countries around the world. History & Origins

The origins of May Day as a workers' holiday lie in the struggle for the eight-hour workday. On May 1, 1886, hundreds of thousands of American workers went on strike across the country, with the largest demonstrations in Chicago. The events that followed — including the Haymarket affair on May 4, in which a bomb killed several police officers and workers — became a rallying point for the international labour movement.

In 1889, the International Socialist Congress in Paris declared May 1 as International Workers' Day in honour of the Haymarket martyrs. By the early 20th century, May Day had become a major holiday in Europe and beyond. In the Soviet Union and other socialist states, it was marked with massive parades and displays of national strength. After the Cold War, the holiday's character shifted in many countries toward peaceful celebrations of workers' rights and social justice.

• Red flags & symbols — The colour red and symbols such as the clenched fist are traditionally associated with May Day, reflecting its roots in the labour and socialist movements.
