About Christmas Day

Christmas Day, celebrated on December 25, is one of the most widely observed holidays in the world. It commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ and has evolved into a major cultural and commercial celebration that extends well beyond its religious origins. For billions of people, Christmas is a time of family gatherings, gift-giving, festive meals, and seasonal traditions.

The holiday is a public holiday in more than 160 countries and territories. Even in nations where Christianity is not the dominant religion, Christmas has become a cultural event marked by decorations, special foods, and an atmosphere of generosity.

History & Origins

The celebration of Christmas on December 25 dates back to at least 336 AD in Rome. Early Christians chose this date — close to the winter solstice — partly to coincide with existing Roman festivals such as Saturnalia and the birthday of Sol Invictus (the Unconquered Sun). Over the centuries, Christmas absorbed many pre-Christian winter traditions including Yule logs, evergreen decorations, and gift exchanges.

The modern Christmas as we know it took shape in the 19th century. Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol (1843) popularized themes of charity and goodwill. Prince Albert introduced the German tradition of the Christmas tree to Britain, and it quickly spread across the English-speaking world. Santa Claus evolved from the Dutch Sinterklaas tradition, based on the historical figure of Saint Nicholas.

How It's Celebrated

Christmas traditions vary enormously around the world:

  • Gift giving — Exchanging presents on Christmas morning (or Christmas Eve in many European countries) is central to the modern celebration.
  • Christmas tree — Evergreen trees decorated with lights, ornaments, and a star or angel on top are displayed in homes, public squares, and shopping centres.
  • Festive meals — Traditional dishes vary by country: roast turkey or goose in the UK and US, bacalhau (cod) in Portugal, tamales in Mexico, KFC in Japan.
  • Church services — Midnight Mass and Christmas Day services remain important for practicing Christians worldwide.
  • Advent — The four-week period before Christmas is marked by Advent calendars, wreaths, and markets, especially in German-speaking countries.
  • Carols & music — Christmas music, from traditional hymns to modern pop songs, is a defining feature of the season.
