About Halloween

Halloween, celebrated on October 31, is a festive occasion rooted in ancient Celtic traditions that has become a major cultural event in many countries. Known for its spooky themes, costumes, and trick-or-treating, Halloween blends ancient superstition with modern fun. It is primarily an observance rather than a public holiday — most people still go to work and school — but its cultural impact is enormous.

History & Origins

Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced "sow-in"), celebrated on November 1 in Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man. The Celts believed that on the night before Samhain, the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred. They lit bonfires and wore costumes to ward off ghosts.

When Christianity spread through Celtic lands, November 1 became All Saints' Day (All Hallows' Day), and the evening before became All Hallows' Eve — eventually shortened to Halloween. Irish and Scottish immigrants brought Halloween traditions to North America in the 19th century, where they evolved into the holiday we know today.

How It's Celebrated

  • Trick-or-treating — Children in costumes go door-to-door collecting candy. This tradition became widespread in the US in the 1950s.
  • Costumes — Dressing up as ghosts, witches, monsters, and increasingly as pop culture characters is central to the celebration.
  • Jack-o'-lanterns — Carved pumpkins with candles inside are displayed on porches. The tradition originally used turnips in Ireland.
  • Haunted houses — Commercial and community-run haunted attractions are a multi-billion dollar industry in the US.
  • Parties — Costume parties for both children and adults are a staple, often featuring themed decorations, games, and spooky music.
