About Father's Day

Father's Day is a holiday celebrating fathers, fatherhood, and paternal bonds. In the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and many other countries, it is observed on the third Sunday of June. Other nations celebrate it on different dates — for example, Australia observes Father's Day on the first Sunday of September, and many Catholic-majority countries celebrate on March 19, the feast of Saint Joseph.

The day provides an opportunity for families to honour fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, and father figures for their love, guidance, and support. It is typically marked by gifts, cards, family outings, and shared activities that reflect each father's interests and personality.

Father's Day is recognised in more than 80 countries worldwide. While it does not carry public holiday status in most nations, it is widely observed and has become an important cultural occasion for expressing appreciation for the role fathers play in families and communities.

History & Origins

The modern Father's Day in the United States was inspired by the success of Mother's Day. In 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, proposed the idea after hearing a Mother's Day sermon. She wanted to honour her own father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran and single parent who raised six children. The first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane on June 19, 1910. However, the holiday was slow to gain official status — many people initially dismissed it as an attempt by retailers to replicate the commercial success of Mother's Day.

President Calvin Coolidge expressed support for the holiday in 1924, and President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honouring fathers in 1966. It was not until 1972 that President Richard Nixon signed it into law as a permanent national holiday, observed on the third Sunday of June. Since then, the holiday has spread internationally and is embraced as a genuine occasion to celebrate fatherhood, though its commercial aspects have also grown considerably.

How It's Celebrated

  • Gift-giving — Popular gifts include ties, tools, electronics, books, sporting goods, and personalised items. Handmade gifts from young children are especially cherished.
  • Greeting cards — Father's Day is one of the top card-sending occasions of the year, with millions of cards exchanged worldwide.
  • Family meals — Many families gather for a special meal, often a barbecue or the father's favourite cuisine, prepared by other family members.
  • Outdoor activities — Fishing trips, golf outings, hiking, and attending sporting events are common ways to spend the day together.
  • Quality time — Beyond material gifts, many families focus on spending meaningful time together — playing games, watching films, or simply enjoying each other's company.
  • Honouring father figures — The day increasingly recognises not just biological fathers but stepfathers, grandfathers, uncles, mentors, and all those who fill a fatherly role in someone's life.
