About Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States observed on the last Monday of May. It is a solemn day of remembrance honouring the men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The holiday carries deep significance for military families and communities across the nation.

Memorial Day also marks the unofficial beginning of summer in the United States. While the day retains its sombre commemorative purpose, it has also become associated with long weekends, outdoor gatherings, and the opening of pools and beaches. This dual nature — reverent remembrance alongside seasonal celebration — is a defining characteristic of the modern holiday.

It is important to distinguish Memorial Day from Veterans Day (November 11), which honours all who have served in the military, living or deceased. Memorial Day is specifically dedicated to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country.

History & Origins

Memorial Day originated in the aftermath of the American Civil War, which claimed more than 600,000 lives. Several communities claim to have held the earliest commemorations. In 1868, General John A. Logan, commander of the Grand Army of the Republic (a Union veterans' organisation), issued a proclamation designating May 30 as Decoration Day — a day to place flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers. The first large-scale observance took place at Arlington National Cemetery that year.

After World War I, the holiday expanded to honour all American military dead, not just those from the Civil War. The name gradually shifted from Decoration Day to Memorial Day. In 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved the observance to the last Monday in May, creating a three-day weekend. In 2000, Congress established the National Moment of Remembrance, encouraging all Americans to pause at 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence.

• National Moment of Remembrance — At 3:00 p.m. on Memorial Day, Americans are encouraged to observe a minute of silence to honour those who have died in military service.
• Parades — Memorial Day parades take place in cities and towns nationwide, featuring veterans, active-duty personnel, marching bands, and civic organisations.
• Ceremonies at memorials — Formal ceremonies are held at Arlington National Cemetery and war memorials throughout the country, often featuring speeches by government and military officials.
• Flying the flag at half-staff — The American flag is flown at half-staff from dawn until noon, then raised to full staff for the remainder of the day.
• Barbecues & gatherings — Many Americans mark the long weekend with cookouts, family reunions, and outdoor activities, embracing the unofficial start of summer.
