The celebration of the new year is one of the oldest observed holidays in human history. The ancient Babylonians held a multi-day festival called Akitu around the spring equinox some 4,000 years ago. The Romans celebrated the new year on March 1 until 153 BC, when the calendar was reformed to begin on January 1 — a date later confirmed by Julius Caesar's Julian calendar in 46 BC. January is named after Janus, the Roman god of doorways and beginnings, who had two faces: one looking back and one looking forward.

When the Gregorian calendar was adopted in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII, January 1 was reaffirmed as New Year's Day. New Year's Eve celebrations grew more elaborate over the centuries. The famous Times Square Ball Drop in New York City began in 1907 and has become one of the world's most iconic countdowns.
